Often my musical ideas grow directly out of a particular instrument’s strengths…But only after I have completed the more tedious task of getting the notes down on paper can I then focus exclusively on orchestration to elevate what I already have—to enhance the surface details, clarify the harmonic structure, heighten the expression, articulate the form.
