Marvin Minsky

If you like somebody’s work, just go and see them. However, don’t ask for their autograph. A lot of people come and ask me for my autograph—and it’s creepy. What I did is read everything they published first, and [corrected] them. That’s what they really want. Every smart person wants to be corrected, not admired.

Marvin Minsky, in a lecture at M.I.T.

  1. THIS! I always thought that I was weird for not wanting to be admired (in the ‘oh, so you’re a celebrity?’ way), but this explains my feelings so much better than I could. I want to meet others who inspire me and will challenge me to be better at what I do. Whether it’s to write, perform, or to just be an all around better person in this world.
    Thank you for sharing.

  2. Glad you liked it! I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few of my heroes, and they’ve almost always been generous with their time.
