The wisdom of puppets

Puppets from the Little Angel Theatre

One thing at a time is another rule. Do not wiggle the puppets about, or slur all the movements together. As John Wright advised, “Every line should have an action and every action should have a meaning. Never put in unnecessary movement.” Puppet theatre is more akin to mime and dance than to human theatre, and a puppet’s movements should be crisp, clean-cut, and drawn in the air very precisely, like those of a dancer. Generally, the principle is new moves on new thoughts.
