Eternal Empire

Any writer, reading over the typescript of a book for the last time before sending it off to the publisher, must wonder what all the effort was for.

Kenneth Rexroth

On September 3, my third novel, Eternal Empire, will finally be out in stores. I started work on this novel in early 2012 and delivered the first draft to my editor in November, so the prospect of seeing it on bookshelves now, less than a year later, is a little surreal. When your first novel comes out, it feels like it’s about to change your life forever; a second book locks in the pattern, proving that the first one wasn’t a fluke, and it makes you feel briefly like a real author. The third book is a little harder to pin down. On some level, it starts to feel like business as usual, although this particular novel is charged with meaning for other reasons: it’s the last installment of a trilogy that has occupied my life for the better part of five years, and the fate of my fourth book is still up in the air.

In other words, I’m savoring it, but not without some trepidation, as I wait to see where things go from here. Still, it’s exciting, and I’m going to mark the occasion with a series of posts next week exploring some of the new book’s origins and themes. In many ways, I’d like to think that it’s the richest novel in the series, and it’s the one that embodies most of the insights I’ve gained into fiction while writing this blog. Later in September, I’m also going to start an author’s commentary for my second novel, City of Exiles, which I’m hoping to explore at the same level of detail that I did with The Icon Thief. I also expect to have some news within the next month or so about my fourth novel, whatever form it ultimately takes, and a few other projects. Thanks, as always, to all of you who have followed this blog for so long—I do hope you’ll stick around. There’s some good stuff coming up…
