That one’s a classic, but I’ve never been sure who said it first. T.S. Eliot crops up a lot. This is the first time I’ve seen Trilling. Could well be. However, the best thing is, my confusion over who said it fits perfectly with what it says.

Yes, I’ve seen it attributed to Eliot, too—but I’ve already quoted him enough!
